कहा जाता है की इस शहर पर पहले चोल और फिर होय्सलास वंस के शासको ने १५३७ शताब्दी तक राज्य किया, इसके बाद केम्पे गौड़ा जो की विजयनगर साम्राज्य का शासक था उसने एक किले का निर्माण करवाया जो की आधुनिक बेंगलोर के निर्माण की नींव था, १६३८ में मराठो ने बेंगलोर को जित लिया लगभग ५० वर्षो तक यहाँ शासन किया, इसके बाद मराठो से इसे मुघलो ने हथिया लिया और मैसूर के वाडियार वंस के शासको को बेंच दिया।

१७९९ के चतुर्थ आंग्ल – मैसूर युद्ध के बाद ये नगर अंग्रेजो के हाथ में आ गया था और यही से इसके वर्तमान स्वरुप की आधारशिला राखी गयी, अंग्रेजो के अधीन होते हुए भी इसका शासन महाराजा मैसूर के नाम से होता रहा और इसी मैसूर की राजधानी बनाया गया.

१९४७ में जब भारत आजाद हुआ तब बेंगलोर को ही मैसूर राज्य की राजधानी बनाया गया और वर्ष २००६ में बंगलौर को इसके कन्नड़ नाम यानि की बेंगलुरु में आधिकारिक रूप से परिवर्तिति कर दिया गया। कर्नाटक में कितने जिले हैं
